Joelle Samuells has always been what you might call a "good girl." She's cute too.

So why is it that all of the men she dates chew her up and spit her out? If men supposedly like good, pretty girls, why is she single at 27 years old.

Life is really kicking her butt--she's facing an eviction from her New York City apartment and the guy she only THOUGHT was her boyfriend has just kicked her to the curb.

On the verge of giving up, Joelle is presented with a unique, revolutionary solution that will make her write off men and focus more on her personal goals. She jumps at the opportunity. When she tries this new solution, men suddenly lose their appeal--Joelle completely pushes them to the side.

Soon enough, men all over New York City, the country and the world over will learn what it feels like to completely lose their hold and power over desperate, single women. My, how the tables have turned.

But is there a downside to this new state of affairs? Is it normal for a young, single woman to have absolutely no interest in men? What about the need to procreate and raise families to keep the human race going strong?

Men Don't Matter? Jayelle Hughes 9780983639206 Books

This is not my normal kind of read, but it is an interesting story with a message that we don't need someone to complete us as a person - we have our friends, our jobs, why do we need to have a partner to make us happy? As Joelle and her friends come to realise that perhaps men really don't matter, they suddenly find themselves happy and fulfilled, but for the guys it's difficult to be on the other side of the fence.

There are funny, sad, meaningful and enlightening moments in Men Don't Matter. The writing is straightforward and the characters are realistic, with a wide range of personalities, but it is easy to sympathize and connect with all of them, especially Joelle.

The ending of Men Don't Matter felt the teeniest bit rushed, but the epilogue at the end was great - I won't tell you more because it will give away a major part of the story, but if you like a good girl-power story, you should definitely give Men Don't Matter a try - who knows, you may just end up with a little inspiration for your own life!

Have you ever wondered what this world would be like if women were in control? Well, in Jayelle Hughes' novel, A World Where Men Don't Matter, she explores just that! The story starts off with a bang with the introduction of its main character, Joelle, who in the beginning is portrayed as needy and clingy to her boyfriend, Jason, who treats her like a doormat. By happenstance, she meets Alexandra, who changes Joelle's life forever by coaxing her into taking a weekly potion that would relieve her of constantly thinking about men as well as catering to them. Instead, the potion realigns her thoughts and actions to solely focus on her self. While reading I could not help but to think that the potion is simply a metaphor for building self- esteem and self-worth, but Jayelle makes it work in this story and it keeps you engaged.

The plot thickens as Joelle recruits her circle of friends, and eventually most women around the world into taking this potion because it is better than any man. Yet, with taking any type of drug, there are side effects, which in this case, the men swoon around these newly empowered women, only to be shooed off like they once did to women themselves.

Jayelle's story is written well and is 99% error free, however, although the story starts off with a bang as it progresses its slows down to a crawl due to the fluff content (repetitious scene writing and irrelevant sub-characters), and then the end seemed rushed, which in turn, makes the storyline lose its steam.

All in all, it's a great read for all women, especially those who could use a little self-esteem boost!

3.5 stars out of 5
Men Don't Matter? (Girl Power Goes to the Next Level), by Jayelle Hughes, is a thought provoking novel that examines the role men play in women's desires and endeavors. The premise of the book is that men are the number one source of conflict for women. To drive this point home, the reader is introduced to Joelle Samuells. Joelle is a "...natural, fresh-faced beauty... [with] healthy, thick long black hair." Despite these physical attributes, Joelle still finds herself unlucky in love. In fact, her life is spiraling out of control both personally and professionally. With no viable clients for her web sales business, she finds herself suddenly single, behind in her rent and in danger of losing her studio apartment.

Distraught, Joelle is presented with a revolutionary formula (MDM483) that shifts the imbalance between the sexes. Specifically, this formula is purported to help women focus on the most important person in life - themselves. Joelle gives the formula a try and it changes everything she has come to know and believe...

This is the second work I've read by this author, and again, her writing style and imagination did not disappoint. Despite its preachy, sometimes repetitive narrative and a few minor editing flaws, the book drives home the point that when the tables are turned in the favor of women, "low supply and high demand definitely raises your price." You will be amazed at how extensive Hughes' insight is relative to the benefits and downfall of this formula.

Men Don't Matter?, at first, came across as a male-bashing novel. However, when I sat back and thought about the plight of women in this country, it became abundantly clear that our society has indeed brainwashed women from youth to believe that their one goal in life should be to get married. Hughes creatively challenged this belief system and empowers women to be a bit more selfish and love themselves first and foremost. Women are worthy!
