Mont Blanc, or ‘Il Bianco’ as it is sometimes known as in Italy; The White One. It sits, regally, upon pleated glacial folds gathered together around a timeless, grey-rock body, high above the French town of Chamonix, lord of all that it surveys. It beguiles, bewitches and charms the lesser folk who seek to frolic and play amongst the buttressed foothills of its ancient frame. In a muddy field somewhere in Cornwall on New Year’s Day, two men make a pact to tackle Western Europe’s highest mountain. Call it a mid-life crisis, with not only his daughter about to leave for university but also the rapidly approaching prospect of his fiftieth birthday to consider walking 170 kilometres across a mountain range seems the perfect antidote. Humorous, reflective and poignant, this is the story of a journey around one of the world’s most iconic mountains, through an area that is full to bursting with stories to remember.

A Tour of Mont Blanc And other circuitous adventures in Italy France and Switzerland eBook David Le Vay

I had read the author's earlier book, The Hairy Hikers, which was a very funny and engaging jaunt through the Pyrenees. In this one, he takes on Mont Blanc in what is a more introspective and serious book than the first. As Le Vay hikes, his experience with nature and his new surroundings conjures memories of his family and history, serving as a kind of therapeutic encounter. The writing is engaging, and while still humorous, leaves the reader wondering about some of the bigger issues in his or her own life as well. At least it did for me. It also left me wishing I could go hike up Mont Blanc myself. For those of a more travel-book orientation, Le Vay also paints a very vivid picture of his surroundings and trails. In all, a very, very enjoyable and stimulating read.

A Tour of Mont Blanc And other circuitous adventures in Italy France and Switzerland eBook David Le Vay Reviews

I really enjoyed this travel book. The author and friend take a walk around Mont Blanc. Along the way they discover nature, other walkers and marmots. The author does a good job of weaving alpine and local history, travel anecdotes and personal philosophy throughout the book. Parts of this book were laugh out loud funny but there were also some more serious parts. Enjoy this arm chair travel through Italy, Switzerland, France and Mont Blanc.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Really captures the camaraderie of the hiking community while conveying the beautiful scenery. And there is now a refuge that is now off my to-stay list when hiking the TMB next month. ;-)
